RYAN ALVAREZ NAMED ONTARIO HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
ONTARIO, CA; (05/14/2013): Former football, aquatics and girls basketball coach Ryan Alvarez has been named Athletic Director for Ontario High School for the 2013-2014 school year. Alvarez, who has been teaching in the Chaffey District for eight years, and for the last seven at Ontario is excited about what the future holds. "There's a lot of good things going on here and they're just starting, especially with Measure P going through and with all the improvements we're going to have in our facilities. This is a really good time for Ontario sports."
Ontario High School Principal Cary Willborn told WeRtheO.com that he is looking for Alvarez 'to bring fresh enthusiasm to Ontario athletics' and that he is confident in Alvarez' work ethic and leadership. For Alvarez, the move is an excellent one. By his own admission, "I love athletics. I think I can definitely help the coaches and support them in a way that will help them grow." In speaking with a just a handful of Ontario's coaches about the possibility of Alvarez as the A.D., all were in agreement that he would be an excellent choice.
Both Alvarez and Willborn recognize there are some tough shoes to fill in former A.D. Rhonda Purwin who will assume the leadership of the Dance program in the Fall. Alvarez said, "She is an amazing A.D. and it's going to be tough to fill her shoes, if you ever can fill those shoes." Likewise, Willborn admits she has been a shining star for Ontario athletics. "She is Ontario High School," he said. "She has exceeded all of my expectations. When she was selected, I looked for her to make improvements and I now believe she is the best A.D. in our District."
Alvarez will take over at a crossroads for Ontario athletics. Measure P provides funding for new athletic facilities which will be built over the 2014-2015 seasons. On tap is a new athletic complex which includes a football and soccer field and a new aquatics complex. In addition, Ontario, which is a member of the Mt. Baldy League will see its league schools changed for the 2014-2015 season. "I honestly think that the re-leaguing for our league makes the Mt. Baldy League much more competitive and more of a challenge for our school. I think that's a good thing." The new league will consist of six schools instead of seven, as in the past four years (Ontario, Chaffey, Colony, Don Lugo, Alta Loma & Montclair).
When asked what he wants people to know about him, Alvarez responded with humility, "I want them to know that I'm an honest person. I'm a man of my word and that I'm an efficient communicator. I want people to able to approach me with their problems or concerns about whatever is happening so we can get out there and handle them before they become actual problems."
NEW LOOK OF THE MT. BALDY LEAGUE
WALNUT, CA; (05/13/2013): Mt. SAC area principals and athletic directors met today in Walnut to re-align area high school sports leagues starting with the 2014-2015 seasons. Twenty proposals were offered but in the end, the prevailing proposal offered by Chaffey was:
JAGUARS & TIGERS INVADE ONTARIO
ONTARIO, CA; (04/24/2013): More than 1,500 students, staff, administrators, Board Members and County Administrators representing the Ontario Jaguars and Chaffey Tigers marshaled their way through the city streets today. Hailed as the first-ever "Catwalk," it was an opportunity for students from both Ontario High School and Chaffey High School to walk for the benefit of their fellow students.

At Ontario High School alone, there are over 400 students who are either homeless or are so close to the poverty line, that they are considered homeless. That financial position is difficult for any family, but especially so for families trying to get their child through high school. The Catwalk hoped to bridge the gap by raising money in a 5k walk to benefit these 'at risk' students.
Seniors from both schools sold tickets and at last count, were very close to reaching their goal of $10,000.00. At 3:30pm today, hundreds of students gathered at their home school and then walked down Euclid toward one another's campus. The large crowds met at De Anza Park, where they were given refreshments and had an opportunity to enjoy each other's company. Shortly thereafter, they were escorted back to their home schools by the Ontario Police Department, who kept the students safe as they walked through the main thoroughfare of Ontario.
On hand for today's event were San Bernardino County Supervisor, Gary Ovitt, President of the Chaffey Joint Union High School District, Sue Ovitt, Vice-President of the Chaffey Joint Union High School District, Josie Estrada, and many other key members of the Chaffey District. According to Ontario Principal Cary Willborn, "From now on, every Catbowl will remember this one." Estimates of the crowds ranged from 1,500 - 2,000 participants.
JAGUARS' SWIMMER JEREMEY PADILLA QUALIFIES FOR CIF
ONTARIO, CA; (04/19/2013) : As a sophomore in 2012, Ontario swimmer Jeremey Padilla shocked the Mt. Baldy League with his incredible speed in the Men's 100M Fly. That speed earned him the number one spot in the league and a 16th place finish in CIF. Now, in his junior year, Padilla has trimmed down, added muscle and improved his speed not only in the 100M Fly, but also in the Men's 50M Freestyle and Men's 100M Freestyle.
Ontario Swim Coach Mike McGowan says, "This year, he'll do even better. He is so much faster and he can probably qualify in even more events. There's no question he's going to advance even farther, you just watch." Padilla's best times so far are: :55.99 in the 100M Fly, :23.5 in the Men's 50M Freestyle and :53.0 in the Men's 100M Freestyle.
In addition to the events already mentioned, Padilla is on the only qualifying Ontario relay team as well. The Men's 200M Medley team consists of Cristian Duarte, Gregory Pinedo, Jeremey Padilla and anchor, Austin Franco. The medley team is expected to better their best time so far when they compete next week against Don Lugo.
Once again, Ontario will host the Mt. Baldy League Swim Preliminaries and Finals on April 29th & May 2nd, respectively. The CIF competition will be held at Riverside Community College during the following week.
CALIFORNIA RESOLUTION HONORS ONTARIO SOCCER
ONTARIO, CA; (04/19/2013): Ontario's renowned CIF Championship Soccer Team received another honor today as OHS was visited by California State Assemblywoman Norma Torres (D-52). Assemblywoman Torres presented Coach Mangione and the team a California State Resolution honoring the team for the outstanding season and ultimate CIF-Southern Section Divison IV Championship.
Each member of the team received a copy of the resolution.
The 2013 Jaguars Varsity Soccer Team has received a number of accolades including boasting the CIF-SS Div. IV Coach of the Year, Vince Mangione and the CIF-SS Div. IV Player of the Year, Adrien Perez.
On hand for today's special presentation was Chaffey Joint Union High School District Superintendent Mat Holton and Ontario High School Principal, Cary Willborn.
"MR. Z" TO SERVE ON CITIZENS' OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE
ONTARIO, CA; (04/19/2013): At the most-recent board meeting of the Chaffey Joint Union High School District Board of Trustees, Ontario parent, Gil Zendejas, known affectionately around campus as "Mr. Z" was appointed to the Citizens' Oversight Committee for Measure P. Measure P was the 848-million dollar Prop 39 bond measure approved by voters in the November General Election. Zendejas joins a fine group of local citizens including Clyde Francisco, Danie McIlvain (Chair), Maria Hunt, Frederick Clay, James Lally and Brad LeCount.
The passage of Measure P means that the nine campuses in the Chaffey District will receive the much needed repairs and improvements that have been long needed. Among the improvements Ontario High School will see are the construction of a new two-story educational building, a new athletic complex including a stadium, a renovated pool and a host of technology improvements.
At yesterday's first meeting of the Citizens' Oversight Committee, Mr. Z was elected to a one-year term as Vice-Chair and two-year term on the committee.
